The Writer & The SME Lone Star Community STC March 19 Meeting

by Louellen Coker on March 13, 2009

Ever had to talk to a Tekkie and felt like you were hearing some foreign language? Or tried to figure out their motivations, how they think, and decided they really were aliens? As technical communicators, we rely on the Subject Matter Expert (SME) to help us understand and explain all things technical to our audience. Since highly technical people seem to speak their own language, and do not always understand the integral nature of what we do, this exchange can be stressful (for both parties) on a good day. In this session we have our own Geek in attendance, and during a mock interview and role play we will look inside the mind and motivations of the Geek and how we can better work with these folks. You’ll walk away with a set of tools you can employ to get the information you need with the least amount of pain for you and your SME.
