From in-house style guides to industry best practices, technical communicators have a tradition of following established standards. Standards promote uniformity, increase productivity, and enhance professionalism. One of the many standards out there was created by the International Standards Organization. So, is ISO just another list of suggestions? Or something more important?
On September 17, the Lone Star Community of the Society for Technical Communication welcomes George F. Hayhoe from Mercer University to speak about the user documentation standard known as ISO/IEC 26514. ISO/IEC 26514:2008 outlines requirements for user documentation as part of the software life cycle. Much of ISO/IEC 26514:2008 also applies to hardware documentation. It covers the product, structure, content, format, and style guidance for both printed and on-screen documentation.
George F. Hayhoe is a fellow of the Society for Technical Communication. He edited STC’s journal, Technical Communication, from 1996 to 2008. He is also a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the IEEE Professional Communication Society, and is a past president of that society. He holds a Ph.D. in English from the University of South Carolina. His professional interests include product and document usability, research in technical and professional communication, and core competencies of professional and technical communicators.
Come learn more about what ISO/IEC 26514 is, what it means to technical communicators, and why you should apply it.
