WBODC’s Monthly Meeting Teaches About Language

by Louellen Coker on September 22, 2009

The monthly meeting of the Women’s Business Owners of Denton County on October 6th will certainly give you something to talk about. Special guest Jeff Klein is speaking on how to encourage a conversation and how to speak directly to a question. He will be teaching attendees to stop “conversation killers” and instead speak in such a manner people are compelled to ask more questions which opens the door for healthy conversation.

Jeff’s speech will not only facilitate conversation, it will expand it as well. He aims to teach people how to “tell what you do for clients instead of your job title.” This will encourage an immediately accurate portrayal of what you do that can leave the other person wanting to know more. This is an important thing in a society where we give throw away titles to anything and everyone. What matters is what you actually do- not what an ambigious job title suggests you could possibly think about doing.

We at Content Solutions think this a great branding opportunity. To turn these everyday language cues into a way to isolate yourself in a field of your competitors. Sometimes we think brevity is the key to writing when really spending those few extra words to explain something can make all the difference. We have been busy applying this line of thought to our own business and to our clients’ and are excited to learn more about this topic.

Jeff is the owner of Klein Creative Advertising, which he founded in 2001 after a long career in television production, communications and marketing. He has been helping businesses and individuals craft targeted messages for over 23 years. Named “Networker of the Year” in 2005 and 2006 by the Team Networking Richardson chapter, Jeff has many innovative ideas on networking.

To attend, please register at www.wbodc.org. If you register before Thursday, October 1, the luncheon and program will only cost $15 for WBODC members and $20 for guests. However, after the 1st prices will increase to $20 for WBODC members and $25 for guest. You will want to arrive by 11:30 to network and get signed in. Lunch and Jeff’s program will be from noon-1:00 p.m.

To read more on how to turn what would be an ordinary encounter into a business opportunity, pick up Seth Godin’s marketing book “Permission Marketing: Turning Strangers into Friends and Friends into Customers.” When combined with Jeff’s speech on language, we at Content Solutions are sure you will start seeing results in your business.
