If you’re a Gowalla user on the iPhone, then you’ve probably noticed that version 3.0 released last week (3.0 coming to the Android and iPad soon). And you’ve probably also noticed that the update is more than just for looks, although the facelift is quite appealing. Gowalla has decided to make itself a multi-check-in app instead of just a check-in app with scavenger hunt properties. So now when you check in at a location with Gowalla, you can post your check-in to Foursquare, Facebook Places, and Tumblr as well as Twitter.
As an avid check-in app freak (I’m not the Social Media Butterfly for Content Solutions for nothing!), this news both excited me and made me cautious. While it will most certainly be nice to just use one app for these three social media platforms, I had to wonder how it would affect the goodies from Foursquare and Facebook Places. I’m already losing my mayorships like mad due to the sudden Foursquare craze, so I don’t want to lose my remaining ones because I’ve checked in with Gowalla instead of Foursquare. Also, what about the Facebook Deals from Places?
According to Mashable, all of these features have been integrated smoothly. You will still be able to earn Foursquare badges, check-ins toward your mayorships, and Facebook Deals. In addition, Gowalla has instilled a Universal Activity Feed, so users can see where all of their Gowalla, Foursquare, and Facebook Places friends have checked in.
Remember, this is all on top of Gowalla’s already fun pin collecting and scavenger hunts for items and trips. You can also leave private notes for your friends at any location with this update, instead of leaving the tips that anyone, friend or not, can see. In effect, if you’re a freak like me and check into several social media platforms, Gowalla has possibly ended your need for multiple apps while checking in.
This Texas company may not have reinvented the wheel, but wow, they really found a way to make headway with the big competition once again. If they integrate Loopt and SCVNGR next, they will be unstoppable.
